Refrigerator Removal in
San Diego
The old fridge from the kitchen swap, or the dead second one that's been humming in the garage for years — heavy, awkward, and full of refrigerant the law won't let you dump. We recover and document the freon on every unit per EPA rules, carry it out of the kitchen or garage, and haul it. A standard fridge is a flat $164, photo-quoted, disposal and metal recycling included. No California sales tax on the service.
How refrigerator removal works in San Diego
1 · Send a photo
Snap the fridge or freezer and where it sits — kitchen alcove, garage corner, or a tight laundry nook. You get an exact flat price back in seconds, no in-home estimate, no callback.
2 · Empty & unplug it
Empty it out and, ideally, defrost it a day ahead so it isn't dripping. Unplug it and pick a window — same-day is often open across the county.
3 · We carry it out
A vetted, insured hauler carries it out of the kitchen or garage, recovers the refrigerant with a certified process, scraps the metal and recycles it. You lift nothing.
How much does refrigerator removal cost in San Diego?
Flat and photo-quoted before anyone drives — the freon recovery, the two-person carry-out, and the disposal are already in the number. For comparison, national cost guides put a traditional full-service appliance removal in San Diego at roughly $100–$250 after a minimum and an in-home estimate, and plenty of them tack on a separate charge for the refrigerant. Ours is a flat price from a photo, certified recovery included, and we carry the unit out for you.
| Unit | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Mini-fridge / bar fridge | $115 |
| Ice maker | $115 |
| Wine cooler (small / large) | $111 / $156 |
| Chest freezer | $146 |
| Upright freezer | $149 |
| Refrigerator (standard) | $164 |
| Refrigerator (oversized / French-door) | $183 |
$75 minimum. Refrigerant recovered and documented on every unit; stairs and garage carries included — no surcharge. Clearing a kitchen remodel or a whole garage of old appliances? Send one photo and we'll price the lot. No CA sales tax on the service — the flat price is all-in.
4 ways to get rid of a refrigerator in San Diego
| Option | Cost | Freon & carry | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| City bulky pickup (People's Ordinance) | Limited / fee | Won't touch freon; curbside only | Eligible houses only — apartments and condos get nothing, and a freon unit can't legally go to the curb |
| Retailer haul-away with a new fridge | $0–35 | Old unit only, one-for-one | Only when you're buying new and only the matching type; the garage second fridge doesn't qualify |
| Self-haul to Miramar / a scrap yard | Low, plus your time | You load it; certified freon drop still required | You need a truck, a two-person carry, and a certified refrigerant-recovery drop for the freon |
| JunkRabbit | Flat from $115 | Freon recovered; we carry it out | None — photo quote, any unit, you do nothing |
Does San Diego pick up refrigerators?
For most of the city, no — and a fridge has an extra legal hurdle on top of San Diego's usual one. Under the century-old People's Ordinance, the City of San Diego only ever collected from single-family homes with city-street access, so a downtown condo, a Pacific Beach apartment or a Chula Vista rental has never had a city truck for its old fridge. Measure B (2022) began charging a fee and unwinding that through 2025–2026, but even for eligible houses the bulky option is limited and appointment-only — confirm your address with Environmental Services at 858-694-7000. And here's the part that traps so many old fridges in the garage: a refrigerator, freezer, wine cooler or ice maker contains refrigerant, which by law must have EPA-certified recovery before the appliance can be scrapped or landfilled. No curbside crew does that — it's why the dead second fridge just keeps sitting there. We handle it: certified recovery, documented, on every unit, carried out of the kitchen or garage, and it's already in the flat price.
What we take
- Refrigerators — standard top-freezer, side-by-side, French-door and oversized; kitchen swaps and the dead garage second fridge.
- Freezers — chest and upright, including the deep freezer out in the garage.
- Mini-fridges & bar fridges — dorm, office, garage and man-cave units; a common student and PCS move-out item.
- Wine coolers & beverage fridges — built-in and freestanding, small and large, refrigerant recovered.
- Ice makers — freestanding and built-in units from a kitchen or bar tear-out.
What happens to your refrigerator after pickup
A fridge is mostly metal, so most of what we haul is recycled as scrap — the steel cabinet, the compressor, the copper lines. Before any of that, the refrigerant is recovered by an EPA Section 608–certified process and documented, which is both the law and the honest thing to do. Only the small non-recyclable remainder is disposed at a San Diego–served facility like the Miramar Landfill. Because the county's disposal is moderate and there's no add-on refuse tax, and because we recycle the metal, doing it correctly doesn't inflate your quote — the flat price already covers the recovery, the scrap routing and the disposal, with no separate freon fee and no California sales tax on top.
Kitchen swaps, garage second fridges and the no-basement reality
San Diego's fridge jobs cluster in two places. One is the kitchen upgrade — the new unit's on the truck and the old one has to be out the same day, threaded through a tight galley kitchen and a narrow doorway without gouging the new floors. The other is San Diego's own signature: because homes here have no basements, the retired second fridge or the deep freezer ends up in the garage, humming away for a decade until someone finally wants the bay back. That's the case in the 1950s ranch houses of Clairemont, the 1970s–80s homes of Mira Mesa, and the South Bay houses of Chula Vista and National City. Either way it's a real two-person carry across a driveway or out of a wedged corner, not a curb grab — and in a Downtown or Mission Valley high-rise it means the fridge rides a booked freight elevator out the loading dock, with the building's COI on file. In the HOA and gated suburbs we load straight from the garage so nothing sits at the curb. The access is handled and the flat price doesn't move.
When people call us for refrigerator removal
- Kitchen upgrade — the new fridge arrives and the old one has to disappear the same day.
- The fridge died — a compressor that quit, a freezer that thawed everything, a unit that's just done.
- Garage cleanout — the dead second fridge and the ancient chest freezer finally leaving the garage.
- Move-out & PCS turnover — a landlord or a Navy family clearing an appliance the next tenant won't want.
- Remodel tear-out — old fridge, wine cooler and ice maker cleared before the contractor starts.
Why San Diego chooses JunkRabbit for fridges
- Flat price from a photo — the number you see is the number you pay; no in-home estimate, no CA sales tax.
- Freon done right — EPA-certified refrigerant recovery on every fridge, freezer and cooler, documented, in the price.
- We carry it out — full-service, not curbside; the two-person kitchen or garage carry is on us.
- Metal recycled — fridges scrapped, not dumped, which is exactly why the price stays fair.
- Same-day when a slot's open, across the city and the South Bay.
What San Diego customers say
"Dead second fridge that had been in the Clairemont garage since forever. They recovered the freon, wrangled it out across the driveway, and it was a flat $164 from a photo — exactly the quote, no tax added. We finally got the bay back."
"New French-door fridge was being delivered to our Mira Mesa kitchen and the old one had to be gone first. Tight doorway, but they eased it out with no scratches on the new floors. One flat number, booked from a photo, done that morning."
"Old chest freezer plus a mini-fridge out of the garage in Chula Vista. I couldn't budge the freezer myself. They took both same day, freon and all. Se habló español, precio fijo, sin sorpresas."
