How Much Does Junk Removal
Cost in San Diego?

The straight answer, no "call for a quote": flat, photo-quoted rates. Single items start at the $75 minimum; a whole-home cleanout is priced by how much fills the truck. Disposal is always in the number, there's no same-day or access surcharge, and — because California doesn't tax the service — no sales tax on top. The flat price you're quoted is the price you pay.

The short answer

Most San Diego jobs land between the $75 minimum and a $732 full truckload. A single couch is $126, a queen mattress $103, a refrigerator $164, a hot tub $390. A packed garage, a beach-apartment move-out, or a whole condo is priced by volume — quarter truck $241, half $431, three-quarter $587, full $732. Every number is quoted from a photo before we roll, so there's no in-person estimate and no surprise at the door. For context, third-party guides put the San Diego average for a national franchise like 1-800-GOT-JUNK around $240 for even a modest load, and local single-item pickups at roughly $99–$160.

The two ways junk removal is priced here

1. Per item — best for a few specific things (a couch, a mattress, an old fridge, a hot tub). You pay the flat rate per piece; the tables below list them. 2. By volume (truck-fill) — best for garage cleanouts, estate and condo clears, beach move-outs and mixed loads, priced by how much space it fills in the truck. Whichever is cheaper for your job is what you pay, and the photo quote tells you which up front. There's a $75 minimum either way.

Truck-load pricing (cleanouts & mixed loads)

Loading, the drive and disposal are included. Loaded from the garage or carried out of the unit; broom-clean finish.

VolumePrice
1/4 truck$241
3/8 truck$338
1/2 truck$431
5/8 truck$513
3/4 truck$587
7/8 truck$661
Full truck$732

What drives the price in San Diego

  • Volume & weight — how much space it fills, and heavy loads (appliances, tile, construction debris) cost more to dump by the ton.
  • Disposal fees — the city-owned Miramar Landfill charges roughly $97–$103 per ton (plus small state recycling fees). That's baked into every flat price, so you never see a separate dump fee — and it's moderate, well under what haulers pay in Seattle or the Bay Area.
  • No basements = garage & canyon lots — San Diego homes are built without basements, so the clutter lives in the garage, and clearing a two- or three-car garage as truck-fill is one of the most common jobs here.
  • Access — high-rise COIs and freight elevators Downtown, beach-alley walk-ups and boardwalk carries at the coast, HOA load-from-the-home in the suburbs — all handled and already in the flat quote, never an add-on.
  • No CA sales tax on the service — California doesn't tax junk removal, so unlike a taxed refuse service there's nothing added on top of your flat number.

Why there's no sales tax — and why the city can't do it cheaper

Two San Diego specifics shape what you actually pay. First, California does not tax junk removal as a service — there's no sales-tax or refuse-tax line added to your flat price, so what you're quoted is genuinely all-in. Second, you might assume the city offers a free option that undercuts a private hauler, but it mostly doesn't: under the century-old People's Ordinance, San Diego collected bulky items only from eligible single-family homes and nothing from apartments or condos. Measure B (2022) is changing that with a fee rollout through 2025–2026, but even eligible houses get only a limited, appointment-only large-item option — the city itself says it doesn't provide robust on-demand bulky pickup and points residents to self-haul or WasteFreeSD (Environmental Services: 858-694-7000). So for most San Diegans, "free city pickup" isn't really on the table, and the honest comparison is between renting a truck and doing it yourself or paying a flat price to have it carried out and hauled in one trip.
