How to get rid of a refrigerator in San Diego

The short answer

That price covers getting it out of the house and routing it to a processor who recovers the refrigerant under certification before the metal is recycled. There is no refrigerant fee, no environmental surcharge, no stair charge. The minimum for any visit is $75, which a fridge clears on its own.

Before you book, check two free routes: retailer haul-away if a replacement is being delivered, and your utility's current appliance recycling offer if the old unit still runs.

Route 1: retailer haul-away, which expires

If you are buying a replacement, ask about haul-away when you order - not later. It is the cheapest option and it exists only as part of the delivery.

The limits are consistent: one unit for one unit, it has to be emptied and disconnected when the driver arrives, and the removal is often ground-floor or curbside only under their contract. That last condition rules out a lot of San Diego - the third-floor beach walk-ups, and the canyon-lot houses in Bay Park, Del Cerro and up the Mount Helix slopes where the kitchen sits a flight below the street.

It is also not retroactive. Put the old fridge in the garage meaning to deal with it later and that offer is gone for good. That garage fridge is the single most common refrigerator we collect in this county.

Route 2: the utility program, if it still runs

California utilities have long run recycling programs aimed at getting old, inefficient but still-working refrigerators off the grid. Check what is currently offered for your address, because it can be free and sometimes carries an incentive.

Standard conditions: the unit generally has to be working and plugged in at the time of collection, there are size and age rules, there is a limit per household, and scheduling can take weeks.

If your fridge is dead, if the garage has to be empty before an ADU contractor starts Monday, or if the house closes escrow on Friday, this is not your route.

What to do before pickup day

• Empty it. All of it, including the freezer drawer nobody has opened since last summer. Crews do not dispose of food, and a fridge full of thawing food is a mess in a hot truck.
• Unplug it the night before and leave the doors propped so it dries out. A sealed warm fridge grows a smell that will outlive the appliance.
• Shut off the ice maker water line if it has one, then disconnect it. Expect a little water.
• Lay a towel down. Defrost water finds its way out of the drip pan on the way across your floor.
• Measure the doorway if it is a French door or side-by-side. See below.

Do not remove the doors yourself unless the unit is going to sit somewhere accessible before removal - in which case take them off or secure them, because an abandoned fridge with a working latch is a child-safety hazard, and that is exactly why the rules about it exist.

The San Diego doorway problem

The single most common obstacle in this city is a wide fridge in a narrow old house.

The 1920s and 30s Craftsman and Spanish-revival bungalows in North Park, Kensington, South Park, Golden Hill and Mission Hills have small kitchens with a narrow doorway and a hard turn into a hallway. Modern French door and side-by-side units were never going to fit through that gap - they were brought in before a remodel narrowed something, or wrestled in on their side by somebody who swore afterwards.

Getting one out usually means taking the refrigerator doors off and sometimes the house door off its hinges. Both are part of the job and neither costs extra.

The 1950s and 60s tract houses in Clairemont, Allied Gardens, San Carlos and Serra Mesa are easier - wider galley kitchens, a straight run to a side door - but they have their own feature: a second fridge in the garage that has been running since before the kitchen was remodeled.

Why the price is what it is

A refrigerator contains refrigerant in a sealed system. Federal rules require that refrigerant to be recovered by someone certified before the unit can be crushed or landfilled - venting it is illegal. Compressor oil is handled separately, and then the steel and aluminum are recycled.

That is why a fridge costs more than a dresser of similar weight, and why leaving one in the alley for a scrapper is the wrong move. The scrapper wants the copper in the compressor. The refrigerant is not their concern, and the unit is still traceable to the address it came from.
