Not right now. The City’s planned bulky-item collection is paused until further notice, according to its own trash-service FAQ. Here is what that means for a couch or a mattress sitting in your garage.
City trash crews empty the carts. There is no scheduled day to set out furniture, mattresses or appliances, and no appointment line to call for one.
After voters passed Measure B in 2022, the City began charging homeowners a solid waste management fee on July 1, 2025, billed with property taxes. It pays for cart service, not for hauling large items.
Municipal Code §66.0105 makes it unlawful to put waste at the curb before 6 p.m. the day before collection or after 6 p.m. on collection day. Downtown’s window is 6 to 10 a.m. So leaving a sofa out “for someone to take” isn’t allowed.
Chula Vista, Oceanside, Escondido, El Cajon and the county’s other incorporated cities each run their own trash service, with their own rules. Check your hauler’s bulky policy first — and call us when it doesn’t cover the job.
Doing it yourself is an option: the Miramar Landfill takes loads by weight, its mattress site on Convoy Street accepts qualifying mattresses at no charge on weekdays, and the Miramar Recycling Center next door handles appliances and electronics. If you don’t have a truck, the time, or the back for it, that’s where we come in.
San Diego is home to most of the Pacific Fleet’s surface ships, and Naval Base San Diego, North Island, the Amphib base in Coronado, Point Loma, MCRD and MCAS Miramar all sit within about 17 miles of downtown.
