SDSU Student Move-Out
Junk Removal

The end of the lease sneaks up fast. SDSU housing move-out is mid-May 2026, the off-campus apartments and mini-dorms empty out the same week, and suddenly there's a mattress, a couch, and a dead mini-fridge nobody has a truck for. We clear the whole thing at a flat, photo-quoted price — mattress from $111, a full student rental as one truck-fill from $241 — carry every piece out ourselves, and donate what's still good. Reserve your move-week slot now, before the rush books it out.

The mid-May window, and why it books out

Every year the College Area runs on one calendar, and it all crunches into a few days in the middle of May. When the SDSU residence halls close in mid-May 2026 and the off-campus leases end within the same stretch, the neighborhood around Montezuma Road, El Cajon Boulevard and College Avenue turns into a wall of curbside furniture at once. There are only so many trucks and so many crews, and they're all busy the exact same week — which is why the honest advice is simple: reserve a window a week or two before your lease-end date. It costs nothing extra, it takes the last-day panic off the table, and it means the truck shows up when your stuff actually has to be gone, not whenever a slot happens to open.

Book it and the day itself is easy: you send a photo, we lock a flat price, and on move day a crew arrives inside your window, carries everything out of the unit, and hauls it in one trip. No hourly meter, no "we'll price it when we see it," and no California sales tax on top of the number.

What ends up in a College Area move-out

  • Mattresses & box springs — the single most common move-out haul; recycled free at the Miramar mattress site rather than dumped.
  • Couches, futons & loveseats — the shared-apartment sofa nobody's driving home to their parents' house.
  • Mini-fridges & microwaves — dorm-room appliances that aren't worth shipping; fridges have the refrigerant recovered.
  • Desks, dressers & cheap furniture — the flat-pack pieces from freshman year, donation-routed where they're still usable.
  • Whole mini-dorm & student-house clears — five bedrooms of it, priced as one truck-fill and split among roommates.

How much SDSU move-out removal costs

Flat and photo-quoted before anyone drives — labor, the truck, the drive and disposal are already in the number. For a sense of the market, national franchises like 1-800-GOT-JUNK average around $240 for a small load in San Diego and quote it in your driveway, while local single-item pickups run roughly $99–$160. Our prices are set from a photo, up front, with no estimate visit.

Full mattress$94
Queen mattress$103
King mattress$114

Shared apartment (truck-fill 1/2)$431
Mini-dorm / student house (truck-fill 3/4)$587
Whole student rental (truck-fill full)$732

$75 minimum. Stairs and no-elevator walk-ups are included — no surcharge. A whole rental is almost always cheaper as one truck-fill than as separate single-item pickups. No CA sales tax on the service — the flat price is all-in.

Roommates: clear the whole house as one load

If you're four or five people in a mini-dorm or a shared house off Montezuma, don't each book a separate pickup — that's the expensive way to do it. We clear the entire unit as a single truck-fill and you split one flat price down the middle (or however you like). A full house of student furniture usually lands in the half-to-full truck range — $431 to $732 — which, split four or five ways, is a fraction of what each roommate would pay hauling their own mattress and desk out individually. One crew, one visit, one number, and the place is empty and broom-clean before the landlord's walkthrough. It's the closest thing to a hassle-free end-of-lease there is.

Four ways to clear a student rental at lease-end

City of San Diego pickup—Not available—No one — apartments get no municipal bulky pickup
Donation drop-offFreeDays; on their scheduleYou lift & drive itOne or two clean, good pieces

Traditional junk removal$150–$600+, quoted on-site1–2 daysThey carry itBigger loads, if you'll wait for a quote

The move-week difference: you get the exact flat price from a photo before we arrive, we come during the crush, and every piece leaves the unit in our truck — not on the curb where it becomes a deposit charge.

Does the city collect couches and mattresses near SDSU?

No — and it catches almost every student off guard. San Diego's trash system still runs on the century-old People's Ordinance, and the newer Measure B is only unwinding it slowly: the city collects from eligible single-family homes, and even those get only a limited, appointment-only large-item option (residents are pointed to self-haul or WasteFreeSD; Environmental Services is 858-694-7000). Apartments and condos — which is what nearly all student housing in 92115 is — get no municipal bulky pickup whatsoever. So the mattress and couch left in a College Area apartment aren't going anywhere on their own; there's no curb program that catches them, and setting them out at the curb usually just triggers a charge against your security deposit. That empty space between "the city won't take it" and "I don't have a truck" is exactly what a full-service hauler is for.

Where your stuff goes after we haul it

A surprising amount of what students leave behind is still perfectly good, so we sort before we dump. Usable furniture — desks, dressers, couches, bookshelves — goes to donation partners like Goodwill of San Diego, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Father Joe's Villages and The Salvation Army, so it furnishes another San Diego home instead of the landfill. Mattresses and box springs are dropped free at the Bye Bye Mattress collection site by the Miramar Landfill (5161 Convoy St) under California's state recycling program. Metal and electronics — including that mini-fridge, with its refrigerant recovered — are routed to recycling, and only the genuine leftovers are disposed at Miramar. San Diego's disposal cost is moderate and there's no add-on refuse tax, which is part of why the flat price holds.

Why students book JunkRabbit for move-out

  • Reserve your window ahead — lock a guaranteed move-day slot before the mid-May rush books it out.
  • Flat price from a photo — the number you see is the number you pay; no estimate visit, no CA sales tax.
  • Roommate-friendly — clear the whole house as one truck-fill and split it, far cheaper than separate pickups.
  • We carry it out — down the stairs, off the porch, out of the mini-dorm; you lift nothing and nothing hits the curb.
  • Donation-routed — usable pieces given a second life, mattresses recycled free.

What move-out customers say

★★★★★

"Booked a week before my lease ended off College Ave and it was the smartest thing I did all semester. They showed up in the window, hauled the mattress, couch and a busted mini-fridge, and I got my deposit back clean. Flat price, no drama."

— Marcus L., College Area
★★★★★

"Six of us in a house off Montezuma all moving out the same weekend. They cleared everything as one load and we split the flat price — worked out to way less than each of us renting a truck. One visit and the place was empty."

— Priya S., SDSU
★★★★★

"My daughter's mid-May move-out and we're out of state, so I booked it remotely from a photo she sent. Exact price up front, they carried it all down, donated the good stuff. Total lifesaver from 1,200 miles away."

— Denise K., parent

SDSU move-out junk removal — FAQ

When should I book for move week?

As early as possible — a week or two before your lease-end date. Mid-May 2026 is the busiest window of the year in the College Area, so a reserved slot guarantees the truck arrives when you need it. Same-day is possible when a crew's free, but don't count on it during the crush.

How much to clear my apartment?

Twin mattress $82, full $94, queen $103, king $114, couch $126, futon $111, mini-fridge $115, desk $83, dresser $126. A whole rental clears as truck-fill from $241 (quarter) to $732 (full). $75 minimum, disposal included, no CA sales tax.

Can roommates split one clear-out?

Yes — the whole house as one truck-fill, split the flat price. Almost always cheaper than everyone booking separate single-item pickups, and it's one visit instead of five.

Does the city pick up couches from apartments?

No — apartments and condos get no municipal bulky pickup in San Diego, so student housing needs a private full-service hauler. Setting it at the curb risks a landlord deposit charge.

What happens to my old furniture?

Usable pieces are donated, mattresses recycled free at the Miramar Bye Bye Mattress site, metal and electronics recycled; only the leftovers are disposed.
