How hot tub removal works in San Diego

San Diego's year-round outdoor-living weather means a lot of backyard spas — and a lot of them outlive their pumps while the patio, the fence and the landscaping grow up around them. A dead hot tub is one of the few things almost nobody can DIY, because it usually can't leave the yard in one piece. Here's the whole job, start to finish:

  1. Send a photo. The tub, and just as important, how it's boxed in — the gate width, the side-yard path, any steps down from a deck or up from a canyon-lot patio. That tells us the access and confirms the flat price.
  2. Get the flat price. A standard hot tub is $390, all in: the disconnect, the drain, the cut-up, the carry, and the disposal. Because California doesn't tax the service, that's the whole number — nothing added at the end.
  3. We cut it up and haul it. A vetted, insured crew disconnects the plug-and-play unit, drains the standing water, cuts the shell into manageable sections with saws, carries every piece out of the yard, and hauls it all away. Same-day or next-day when a slot's open.

What's included

  • Disconnect & drain — we unplug a standard 120V plug-and-play spa and drain the remaining water.
  • Cut-up removal — the acrylic shell is cut into sections so it clears the gate, the side yard or the deck steps.
  • The heavy carry — every piece carried out of the backyard by the crew, not you.
  • Haul-off & disposal — everything taken away and disposed of, all in the flat price.

Other heavy backyard and wellness items we take, flat-quoted: a cold-plunge tub ($271), a sauna ($293), or a swim spa (quoted from a photo).

How much does hot tub removal cost in San Diego?

One flat price, photo-quoted before we arrive. The disconnect, the cut-up, the carry, and the disposal are all in it — and there's no California sales tax on the service.

$75 minimum (a hot tub is well over it). Disconnect, drain, cut-up, carry and disposal included. No CA sales tax — the flat quote is the whole price.

For comparison, traditional hot tub removal often runs $300–$700+ after an in-person estimate, with the cut-up sometimes billed extra. Ours is one flat number from a photo with the cut-up included.

The punchline: a hot tub is the rare item with no municipal option at all — the only real choice is doing the cut-up yourself or hiring it out. We're the flat-price version of "hire it out."

Does San Diego pick up hot tubs?

No — and unlike a couch or a mattress, there isn't even a slow municipal fallback to wait on. San Diego's bulky pickup is thin to begin with: under the century-old People's Ordinance, the city only ever collected from single-family houses, apartments and condos get nothing, and even eligible houses get a limited, appointment-only large-item option built for a few manageable items (Environmental Services, 858-694-7000). A hot tub is hundreds of pounds and the size of a small car — it's simply not something any municipal program collects. The Miramar Landfill will accept the debris if you bring it, but only after you've disconnected it, drained it, cut the shell into pieces, and loaded it into a truck yourself. In other words, the "free" path is the entire hard part of the job. That's the whole reason to call us: we do the disconnect, the drain, the cutting, and the hauling as one flat-priced service.

What happens to your hot tub after pickup

A hot tub is a mix of materials, and we sort it rather than dump it whole. The metal frame, pump and heater are recycled as scrap, and the acrylic shell and foam are disposed of properly at a San Diego–served facility. Because the county's disposal is moderate — far cheaper than the pricey West Coast metros to the north — doing it right doesn't inflate your price. Nothing about the tip fees or the recycling routing becomes your problem; you just get your patio, deck or side yard back, cleaned up and ready for whatever comes next — a firepit, a dining set, or just open space.

Gates, side yards and canyon-lot patios

The hard part of a hot tub is never the tub — it's the path out of the yard. Most spas were craned or forklifted into place before a fence and a patio went up around them, so they can't come out the way they went in. That's why cut-up removal is the standard method: we section the shell so it clears a standard gate, a narrow San Diego side yard, or a run of deck steps. Around here that path often means a canyon-lot patio in Scripps Ranch or Rancho Bernardo, a tight zero-lot-line side yard in a Carmel Valley or Otay Ranch HOA home, or a Del Mar or Point Loma hillside terrace. Send a photo that shows the gate width and the route to the driveway and we'll confirm it all in the quote — no surprises when the crew arrives. In an HOA or gated community we haul straight from the yard, so nothing sits out front, and for a hardwired 240V spa we ask that a licensed electrician disconnect it at the breaker first; once it's de-energized, the rest is ours.

When people call us for hot tub removal

  • It finally died — the pump or heater quit and a repair isn't worth it.
  • Reclaiming the patio — you want the outdoor space back for a table, a firepit or turf.
  • Selling the house — a dead spa is a liability at showings; clear it before you list.
  • New tub coming — the old one has to go before the replacement is set.
  • Inherited or just bought the home — with a broken hot tub you never wanted.

Why San Diego chooses JunkRabbit for hot tubs

Frequently asked questions

How much does hot tub removal cost in San Diego?

A standard hot tub is a flat $390, quoted from a photo — covering the disconnect, drain, cut-up, carry and disposal. A cold-plunge tub is $271 and a sauna $293. No CA sales tax, so the quote is the whole price. Very large or built-in swim spas are quoted individually.

Do you disconnect it?

We disconnect and drain a standard 120V plug-and-play spa. A hardwired 240V unit should be disconnected at the breaker by a licensed electrician first; once it's de-energized we handle the rest.

How do you get it out of the yard?

We cut the shell into sections with saws and carry it out piece by piece — the standard method, included in the flat price. No crane needed, even on a canyon-lot patio or a tight side yard.

Does San Diego pick up hot tubs?

No — it's far over any municipal bulky-pickup size, and most residents get no bulky service anyway. Miramar would require you to disconnect, cut up and haul it yourself. We do all of that for you.

Can you quote and remove it the same day?

We quote flat from a photo right away, and same-day or next-day removal is usually available. Show us the gate, side-yard path or steps in the photo.

How is this different from a traditional hauler?

We give the exact flat price from a photo, do the disconnect, drain, cut-up and haul ourselves, and add no CA sales tax. Traditional hot tub removal often runs $300–$700+ after an on-site quote.
